How bad is this? I’m selling my wife’s X3 which had a ZHP shift knob on it. I always liked the weight of that and also the shorter overall height vs. stock. So after replacing the ZHP with the original knob on the X3, I thought, hmm, let’s see how it goes on the wagon! It is nice, and a definite improvement over the stock “wood” knob.
But then, it’s not only an ///M branded thing in a 325xi wagon, but it’s also got that 6th gear there. I mean, it’s not like I’m going to get confused. But... it kinda bugs me.
What does oppo think? Should I just swap in a 6-speed, real quick?

Yes, clearly the answer to a $50 shift knob is to go ahead and snag that $7,500 tranny to be sure they match.
Look, I didn’t become president of our local chapter of The OCD Car Enthusiast Guild by letting bullshit like this slide.

No you’re right. You did it by sleeping your way to the top!

They do sell a 5 speed M knob.
I guess it’s not so bad, I do have an M on the stick in my 328i.
Doesn’t light up like the one in my M3 though.

Leave it if you like it. The sixth gear would bother me, but just because I’m nuts. I don’t think it would be enough to make me buy another in 5 speed.
I’ve got the ZCP knob mated to a UUC short shifter in the M3 and it’s perfect. I like the weight and size a lot better than the stock one.

The 6-speed pattern bothers me more than the M.

There’s little chance of me spending actual money on a totally separate knob that just has the 5-speed pattern on it.
But more importantly, what is that “POWER” button with a light on it, in your second pic? Please tell me when you press it, you get an extra 50hp and a Clarkson-voice POWAAAAHHHH from your speakers.

I had the UUS ssk in my old wagon, but it was such a hassle to install that I left it when I sold it, and couldn’t justify the cost or the time on the new car. I hear the Z3 shift linkage does a similar thing for like, less than $100, but still, the installation is tough without a lift and/or a helper.

Me too. I can live with the M... I do really like how it shifts with the extra weight and shorter height, even if the throw is the same of course.

haha, that’s first gear for you - the stock knob looks out of square on the X3 even in third/fourth. It drives me nuts.

Ugh, and I guess I’ll have to get an S54 too while I’m at it. Man, this just got expensive.

Oh yea. I watched the DIY when I got it and promptly let my inde mechanic put it in. After purchasing the shifter, the double shear selector rod, and paying to have it installed it was a nearly $800 affair. Prob would not do again.

I’m not exactly sure what it does; I know when the E60 M5 you could select how much power you wanted from the engine 400 or 500. Not sure how it did that, whether or not it lowered the red line or leaned up the mixture or something. I will say I can take it to the red line without the button pressed. I normally drive around with my M button pressed, so that sets all the car to all my preferences and that button is pressed in those preferences. I figured more power wasn’t a bad thing.

Yeah but you got a lot more horsepower, too!
Really, though, the knob is NBD, especially when you consider that you like the feel of it. That 6th gear thing might irritate me for about half a day, but as long as no one else will drive the car and accidentally think that there *is* a 6th gear, it’s irrelevant.

Fixed.
Seriously... on the ssk. I won a BavAuto photo contest, so I had a gift cert. and still had to pony up for the UUC kit. I did it with a friend, in the marina shop with a lot of jack stands, etc. while also fixing an exhaust leak, doing the post-cat 02 sensors, so the exhaust was already off the car for those jobs. It was a half-day affair, still.
One funny thing about the kit - there’s a tiny clip you have to put on blind, above the transmission, can’t see it from above or below, can only reach from below, and only by hugging the transmission from underneath. They gave me two clips, though, and I wasn’t sure why. Until I dropped on and it went... somewhere. Not on me or the floor, though. I got the second clip out and was quite happy for its inclusion. It’s not that you actually need both.... but they knew.
